Dance Auckland
Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I wear?
Your shoes are the most important item - they should fully encase and support your foot and preferably have a slippery sole. Low heels or flat shoes are strongly recommended for learning nights as they help balance and poise. Definitely NOT recommended are: slip-on shoes, very high heels, sandals of any sort, sports-type running shoes. Your clothing should be comfortable and layered - as you will get hot when dancing.
What age group are your classes?
The groups have adults of all ages - as dancing is for all ages. For example, we have younger people preparing for weddings or other events. Equally we have many mature people who are returning to dancing or starting a new way of exercise and meeting people.
Do I have to pay for lessons in advance?
No, you only pay on a casual weekly basis. We understand that sometimes you can’t attend - and therefore you don’t pay for that week. We think we are the only dance school in Auckland working on this basis, but we have been popular for years because of being fair – and being good.
Can I start at any time?
Yes - you can start any week, just by coming along without booking. We run on a continual basis throughout the year, without blocks or semesters. Our groups are designed to work with new joiners each week. The dances are rotated regularly. We make sure that every dance is a good dance for beginners.
Do you have a group for more advanced dancers?
Yes - there are separate groups for Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, and Advanced dancers. There is also a wide choice of private lesson arrangements to cater for all levels of dancers and those people wanting to focus on certain areas of their dancing.
Do I need a partner?
No – we concentrate on social dancing and there are helpers in the classes. But you are welcome to stay with your regular partner if that is what suits you.
Where can I go dancing?
Auckland is well served by dance venues. The best and most up-to-date information is obtained by becoming involved in a dance class. Dance Auckland runs regular Dance Events. There are also information boards where weekly dance bands and venues are advertised. See Useful Links for more information.
